Johan Emil Jansson was born on June 3, 1891, on Sannerud farm in Hābol Parish as the fifth child of Jan Magnus Andreasson and Anna Lovisa Olsdotter. His father was a tenant farmer. Selma Leandersdotter was born on May 11, 1887, on Rōsa farm in Hōkhult area of Ārtemark Parish to Leander Henriksson and Kristina Andreasdotter. Her father Leander was killed in an
iron mine in Minnesota in 1891, and her mother remarried to August Granath in 1897. Selma had spent 1906 to 1910 in Minnesota where she spent time with her father’s brothers John and Albin, worked as a waitress and housekeeper, and learned to speak English
