Wicks, J. E., Architect — Astoria — born in the Vasa area, Finland, on 13 July 1878. Aside from going to school he also studied architecture and drawing. On 20 May 1899 he set foot in New York from where he continued his travels to the states around the Rocky Mountains. During the years to follow he held different jobs in Colorado, Utah and Montana while he at the same time studied on his own. In 1903-04 he took a course at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, taking private lessons almost the whole time in drawing and building design. He settled in Astoria, Oregon in 1905, as an architect and had his office in room 204 in the Astoria Savings Bank Building. Wicks has done the drawings for the new high school building, Andrew Young’s home, Dr. Kinney’s home and more. He is a member of the Free Masons, Knights of the Pythias, the Swedish Lutheran parish, vice president of the Scandinavian American Bank. He is married to Maria Söderberg from Jakobstad, Finland since 1905 and has two daughters.
