Ulrik Shoberg

Ulrik Shoberg (Sjöberg) was born on May 14, 1868 in Grevie, Skåne. He was a crofter’s son who immigrated in 1887 when he was 18 years old. In 1892, he joined Svenska Bröderna, later the Swedish Society Linnea, and at that time, was a sawmill worker. He changed his last name to Shoberg. On November 16, 1895, he married a fellow Swede, Helen Erickson, which was recorded in the marriage records of Portland’s First Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple had two daughters, Edna (1896) and Gladys (1900), and lived in North Portland on Missouri Avenue. Many of the neighbors in the area were from Finland and there were additional Swedes and Germans, too. Ulrik died in Vancouver, Washington in 1957 and is buried in Rose City Park Cemetery in Portland with his wife Helen.
