Newman, C. M.Newman, C. M., printer, musician Portland born in Jakobstad, Finland, February 26, 1877. Emigrated together with his mother on Midsummer Day 1886, and came to San Francisco, California, where his father had emigrated seven years earlier. The travelers reached the end of their journey on July 27. At age 14 Newman started learning the typesetting profession in the pressroom of the [Swedish] newspaper Vestkusten, and two years later he began dedicating some of his time to music and taking lessons in trombone playing. On July 6, 1906, he moved to Portland. Initially he worked at the Telegram printing office, and later became the manager of the pressroom for [the Swedish newspaper] Oregon-Posten, a position he still holds. He is a member of Swedish Society Linnea, Woodmen, Modern Woodmen of the World, Musicians Union, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. In 1908 he married Amanda Lundquist from Astoria, Oregon. They have a son.
