Lidell, Waldemar,
businessman, vice-consul — Portland — born in Svarteborgs parish in Bohuslän, on
June 26, 1873. At the age of 15 he moved to Stockholm where he received
employment with his brother, Lidell, purveyor to His Majesty the King. In 1904
he traveled to Germany, France, and England to study business, but extended his
trip first to the world exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri., then to Portland,
Oregon, where he became so taken with the climate, conditions, etc., that he
decided to stay. In 1905 he opened a bookstore, which he later combined with a
ticket office and real estate sales. On November 2, 1908 he was appointed
Swedish vice-consul. Lidell is the actual founder of the colony Newhem near
Sheridan, about 50 miles southwest of Portland. He is a member of Swedish
Society Linnea, the Swedish National Association, and the Portland Chamber of
Commerce, as well as an honorary member of the Swedish Song Club Columbia. On
February 25, 1905, he married Ingeborg Klein from Stockholm; they have a son.
